1. What is the Mayan Train?

The Mayan Train is an ambitious rail project that aims to connect various places in the Yucatán Peninsula, offering travelers the opportunity to explore both its main cities and tourist areas, as well as its communities of great cultural value.

And it will not only operate as a passenger train, but also as a freight train. In addition, it also aims to promote sustainable tourism and preserve the cultural and historical richness of the area.

2. What is the complete route of the Mayan Train?

This new form of transportation runs approximately 1,500 kilometers through five Mexican states: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

According to the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, it is estimated that the railway will link up to 145 points of interest. Including around 17 Magical Towns, 6 World Heritage Sites, 38 indigenous communities and 50 archeological zones.

Tourist attractions along the Mayan Train route 

Like Valladolid, Bacalar, the Pre-Hispanic City of Palenque, the colonial city of Campeche, the archaeological zone of Chichen Itza and the majestic archaeological site of Tulum and Coba, just to name a few.

But that’s not all, in addition to the historical attractions, the Mayan Train will also take you through impressive natural landscapes, such as jungles, mangroves and beaches. In other words, it will allow you to enjoy a little bit of everything.

3. What is it like to travel on the Mayan Train?

So far, it is known that the Mayan Train ticket will include transportation on the train and that some wagons will offer food and beverages on board, this to guarantee a complete experience during your trip.

It has also been announced that the train will be modern and comfortable, with spacious seats and panoramic windows that will allow you to enjoy the scenery in all its splendor. In addition, it is expected to have both ground and air security. 

4. How much will the tickets cost?

Although the final price of tickets to travel on the Mayan Train has not been revealed, certain fares have been announced. And especially, that Mexicans will receive a preferential price compared to foreigners.

The following are the latest fares for the Mayan Train provided by Fonatur.

Mayan Train Prices

  • General admission for Nationals $60.00 MXN
  • Entrance for foreigners $80.00 MXN
  • National Students with valid ID $30.00 MXN
  • National Teachers with valid ID $30.00 MXN
  • National and Foreign Parking for cars $10.00 MXN
  • National and Foreigner Parking for bus $20.00 MXN

People traveling free of charge

  • National senior citizens with valid INSEN ID
  • Retirees and pensioners Nationals with valid INSEN ID card 
  • Children under 5 years old for Nationals
  • Persons with hearing, motor, visual, psychosocial or intellectual disabilities for Nationals and Foreigners.
  • Children under 12 years old for Nationals (on Saturdays)

5. When will the Mayan Train be inaugurated?

The Mayan Train is scheduled to star operating in December 2023. However, it is important to check for updates and exact dates before planning your trip, as dates may be subject to change.

6. Where to stay during your trip in Quintana Roo?

As you can see, the Mayan Train offers a unique and fascinating experience. Especially if you are on the routes that pass through Quintana Roo, since this state has several natural and historical gems that you can visit.
